Windy day today in Oahu, but no sooner had we nosed the bow of the Kahala Kai back to shore to find the lineup for the Seatiger when I hear the usually composed Captain Roger yell……. “WHOA!” I look over the starboard side just in time to see a massive froth of whitewater and know it must be the big guy! As Roger inches us closer to the divesite I’m not awed by the surface show, but franticaly tugging my fins on and making sure my gear is in place.
Two fin slaps and another full head-and-shoulder peek from the cetacean and we’re on top of the ball. I hop in and dump by BCD and look what I see! Two full size humpbacks cruising effortlessly along the side of the 150 shipwreck. I’m doing my best to get my camera into the proper mode and keep one eye on these beauties….. I guess the point and shoot showed it’s weakness today, but everyone knows what it is!
Got a little video clip too and when I trim it down, I will post it in the video section of the myspace page. I figure I have done about 1000 dives here in Hawaii and this is the first time I got to splash with Humpbacks (on scuba). I estimate their size as about as full as they get…. keep in mind I’m probably 30 to 40 feet away from them at the time I snapped these images. They must have been 40 feet long each, at least.
After that, the rest of the diving seemed trivial….. here’s a nice shot of a whitemouth on the top of the wheelhouse of the Seatiger though…. not quite as impressive, huh?
Aloha and WOW!

Just a quick heads up to let everyone know that our NIGHT DIVE was sick last night. While people were stuck in traffic on the H1 a few of us hardcore divers braved the elements and cashed in on two awesome dives. The first was at Baby Barge where I have never seen so many turtles! I think there were at least 5 in the wreck, three in the trutle cave two outside the cave and two in the Shark Cave! Not to mention this guy!
We also came across a cool crab that I’m not sure I’ve ever seen before…..
And finally, towards the end of the dive we spotted this great Fishers Star….
Our next dive was at Fantasy Reef. With the current pumping a bit and surge sending us every which way it felt like we were in a washing machine. Now imagine taking photos whilst in the aforementioned machine….. not so fun. Needless to say we headed to the Shack afterwards and got one final picture of JD with the KD star…..
Great dives guys. Big Mahalos to Captain Joe, Courtney and the crew at the Shack as well as All Star divers Jeremy, JD, Jason, Rich, Sam and Ed. See you guys next time!
What better way to celebrate Valentines day than with your boys. Yesterday Jay, Song and I went out to E beach to catch some world class shore diving. No dolphins to report but you could hear the whales singing. We headed to the shark cave first and saw a spotted eagle ray on the way out. Another highlight was watching the octopus out hunting on the reef!
Next we headed over to the pipe where Song got friendly with a small turtle and Jay got some good pics of the porcupine puffer. I had a blast snapping a few other photos and here they are!
Been a great week for diving. Eva and Natalie have been working on their Advanced Certs and Jay just finished his…. Congrats Amigo. Also, been diving with Chris a bit and got to meet Dave (Nat’s Dad) out here to thaw out from Michigan.
Lots of good stuff with dives at the Corsair, Sea Cave, The YO 257, Nautalus Reef and Kewalo Pipe. Enjoy the photos and holler at me when you want to dive!
Great news coming out of the island of Oahu this week….. people have been seeing heaps of Humpback Whales! These guys come down from Alaska every winter and treat residents and tourists to spectacular shows. While on Maui a few weeks ago I lounged on the beach and watched as two made their way back and forth spouting, fin slapping and breaching…. INCREDIBLE.
Also, Saturday I had one of the best dives of my life at Kewalo Pipe. While finishing up the dive, I caught a glimpse of something grey in the distance. SHARK?!?! methinks, but NO….. A HUGE MANTA RAY came swimming past. Must have been 12 feet across and Ski and Rich got a good view of him too! WOOO HOOO!
As promised, I have mailed out a bunch of Kaimana Divers stickers….. they seem to be popping up in strange places around town. Here are a few entries submitted by YOU the Friends of Kaimana Divers or FOKD.
Hope everyone is doing great…. let me know when you wanna dive!
