The West Side Connection

Heaps of awesome dives this week. Early on I hit the YO 257 and San Pedro wrecks, then the Seatiger, night dives on China Wall and Koko Craters, exploring Channel Reef and today a choice crew of divers headed out to the Westside to dive Pinnacles and the Moi Cages.

Below you see some cool shots. Check out the night dive with Camilla getting up close with a banded coral shrimp! All shark photos (except the b and w) courtesy of Ski

Next time we plan a westside trip, you won’t want to miss it. We probably saw 6 galapagos sharks cruising under the cages and everyone was super stoked when we got back on the boat….. big thanks to Cap Kyle, Derek and the KR2. Mahalo to everyone for diving with Kaimana Divers this week, enjoy the show below!

Weekend Update…

Aloha Everyone,

Great weekend of diving this week. Lots of cool sites and some new ones too. We tried Erics Ledge the other day and found some great nudis while yesterday found Nav and I exploring West of Nautalus Reef. We spotted a number of epic stretches of reef and a cool turtle.

Here are some photos from recent adventures to the YO, Seatiger, Kewalo Pipe and the Ledge.

FREE Scuba Dives….

Aloha Scuba Divers,

For the next few weeks I have decided to offer a special that will be hard to resist. To me, the only thing better than scuba diving is scuba diving for FREE!

So, here’s how it works…..

You the certified scuba diver (and ultimate bargain hunter) books yourself and one or more of your non-diving friends on one of my afternoon charter boats. We will do two shallow dives to a maximum depth of 40 feet.

As a PADI isntructor with two years of full time diving here on Oahu, I will personally conduct a Discover Scuba Dive in shallow water over our amazing reefs. You get to take advantage of the free dives and possibly get some friends into diving….. and the timing couldn’t be better as summer (read EPIC diving) is just around the bend!

Our charter boat is a large, comfy catamaran and will get you out to our sites in minutes. Great views of Diamond Head, cool breezes and a good chance to see dolphins and turtles are just some of the sites topside!

After a breif intro and skill session practice we will head out to explore the underwater realm looking for turtles, eels, octopus and maybe even a shark or two!

To take advantage of this special please condsider the following…..

1) You must be a certified scuba diver and provide proof of such certification (PADI, NAUI, SSI etc.)
2) Your friend(s) will need to answer a medical quistionairre prior to diving and may be declined if any portion is not completed or the conditions are not met.
3) Your FREE dive does not include rental gear (only tanks and weights).
4) If your booking is for yourself and one other diver you will recieve 50% off your charter. To get your dive for FREE you must bring along two non divers (max 4).
5) You must book the dive during a weekday (M-F) over the next two weeks (April 20 to May 4)

I hope this will encourage all of you to get someone new into diving this summer! To learn more about Kaimana Divers, PADI courses and Oahu Scuba Diving please visit my links below.

Good Friends, Great Dives!

Aloha Everyone,

Been some great diving this week. On Monday I headed out with Megan and did a nice dive in the afternoon at Kewalo Pipe and Nautalus reef. Great video of an octopus we found….. check out the color change at the end of the clip.

Today I had a morning session with Lisa and Camilla. Both of these lovely ladies are working hard on their advanced class and today we tackled their Wreck and Navigation Dives. Conditions were amazing at the YO 257 shipwreck. I looked up at one point and could make out clearly Roger and Josclyn standing on the boat (from 79 feet under).

Here are some photos of our dives this week: Enjoy and check the calendar at www.myspace.com/kaimanadivers

Molokai Adventures, Diamond Rings and lots of Sun

Aloha Everyone,

I realized I haven’t posted in a few days, so here is the latest. First let me start off by saying that Wed and Thurs were excellent. Not only did I ask for the lovely Michelle’s hand in marriage (she said yes) but I got to cruise off island for a few with some great friends and a trip over to Molokai.

Breaching Humpback Whales, Spinner Dolphins, a Manta Ray, one 20 lb Mahi Mahi and a lot of tears of joy after the birthday presentation of the diamond ring later we were all ready to hop in at our remote East Side Molokai site of Mokuhooniki Rock. Here are some snaps of excellent coral, good friends and beautiful conditions:

Alas, it was time to get back to Oahu and this morning I took Ski out while Justin slept in. Nice work, dude. It all worked out great and we had a nice dive on the Seatiger with a turtle, spotted eagle ray and a few trips through the wheelhouse. For our second dive we worked our way over to Kewalo Pipe and I was on a mission to find our frogfish we spotted earlier in the week. Not only did we find him but got some great swim time with him…… no photos though, please see post below. More fun with Joscyln on our second dive…. TIME TO GET THAT PADI CLASS GOING GIRL! The following are from our dives today.

Enjoy, Happy Easter and Aloha from beautiful Oahu!

Frogfish, Frogfish, Frogfish!

Some weeks are strange. You don’s see a frogfish for months and then in two days you spot three of them. I guess they work in shifts. They are so amazing too because they look like nothing I have ever seen! Great dives with Chris, Casey, Cathy, Laura and Mark the past few days. The Seatiger has been epic as usual…… check out the spotted eagle rays!

I love watching those guys “fly” around the wreck. To see such a simple design makes you wonder why we can’t move like that, huh? Stupid legs and lungs!

By far the most incredible of all critters spotted the past few days have been the Commersons Frogfish. As Mark remarked today, get it?, they can expand their stomachs to 12 times the size to accomodate any sized snack. They catch unsuspecting fishes by dangling a lure out in front of their mouths and snatch up anything that dares wander near in a split second! They are also masters of camoflauge and I could have swam over 12 today and not even noticed. Chris did yesterday though and here he is claiming his find!

The Seatiger was home to another that we found this morning with a little help from our friends…. can you see it?

Finally, I flipped the camera into video mode and caught this beauty at Kewalo Pipe today. Check out how he’s sucking in water and pushing it out on the sides…. He’s Jet Propelled baby! Also check out the spread eagle landing at the end of the clip!

Westside adventure: Mahi Shipwreck and Black Rock…

We have had an amazing weekend here in Oahu everyone. The weather has warmed up a bit and it’s almost feeling like summer!

Friday I took advantage of incredible South Shore conditions and took my Rescue class out to Diamond Head. With the lighthouse in the background, Jay and Mari did a great job working on the finer points of bringing Joe to safety. I think Jay now knows what it feels like to be in a washing machine with a few shovels full of sand. Great job though guys, one more day and you are Rescue Divers.

Saturday found a small crew (Matty G, Nav, Nolan and Lynne) joining me for a voyage on a private charter. The 3/4 time is a great boat to dive off and Captain Lee was top notch. After loading in at Ko Olina we headed up the coast for our first destination the Mahi Shipwreck. This baby has been on the ocean floor for 25 years and is impressive! Even though vis was down a bit (50 feet) we still had an awesome time checking out the twisted metal and frayed cable of this behemouth!

Here are a few pics from the wreck:

Next up was an awesome spot called Black Rock. As the sun dipped down into the sky, we geared up to explore this ledge that lies at 60feet. Nice little coral formations here and tons of pukas. We saw at least 4 yellowmargain morays and Matt got to try out the underwater camera for the first time. Here’s his shot of an arc-eyed hawkfish…… awesome for your first attempt!

And finally, I caught this little crab right before we came up.

Awesome weekend out there and thanks so much for diving with Kaimana Divers. Pretty slow week coming up so if you have some time and would like to get out diving, I would be stoked to be your guide!

Aloha and have a great week everyone….
